Question 2 – How much do you want to pay?

What budget do you have in mind?

We advise buying 15 nappies initially and based on this advice we have calculated the birth to potty training (BTP) cost of each nappy to help you compare across our selection.

Some babies may need more than 15 nappies if they are very heavy wetters or soil more frequently.  However, 15 is a good starting point and you can see how you go and top up with a few more if you need to.  Our maxi discount kits are a brilliant way to save money on your start up costs.

There is one exception to this rule - when buying one part nappies it is good to have a few more in reserve as you are washing the waterproof element every time. Washing each one less frequently will help with the longevity of the nappy. Lots of customers buy a few two part nappies for night time use plus a maxi pack of the one part nappy they like.

The BTP cost is shown on the summary for each product. It is only an average calculation and the amount you end up spending might slightly differ but it is a very useful comparison and it indicates which nappies are more or less expensive than others.

Our BTP calculation includes the cost of the nappies and any wraps you might need.  You then just need to add on the cost of any accessories you fancy. Our accessories packs save you money and contain everything you need to make washable nappies very easy and hassle free. You may need to top up with liners at some point but these are an inexpensive product.

Paying for everything upfront – how to avoid this

One of the things that can be off putting about washables is paying for your nappies in a lump sum upfront rather than buying a pack of disposables with your weekly shopping.

The cost of disposables mounts up, and is upwards of £1,000 per baby so even the most premium brand washable nappies will save you a lot of money compared to using disposables but there is the issue of finding the money upfront.  If funds are tight then opt for one of our brilliant budget buy nappies.  However, even if you like one of our non budget styles of nappy you do not generally need to fork out the whole birth to potty cost in one go:

Firstly, if you decide to use multi size nappies then you will only need to buy the first size of nappies initially (and wraps if using a 2 part nappy) and then buy the second size 6-9 months later.  Most multi size nappies only have 2 sizes and the second size of the nappy will fit until potty training.

Secondly, even if you want to use a birth to potty nappy, you don’t have to buy a whole set upfront if you don’t want to - there are no rules.  Our mini discount packs are a perfect starting point and then you can mix and match with disposables and add to your collection when you can.  This will obviously increase your overall nappy cost slightly as you are buying disposables for a period of time but it will still save a lot of money versus using disposables full time.

How we have calculated our birth to potty cost

Your individual purchasing needs may differ from this average but our BTP cost calculations enable a good comparison across the range.

Our average recommended starting number is 15 nappies.  This number is based on an average baby and using one type of nappy full time. If you mix different types of washables then you will only need 15 in total across the different types.

For two part nappies we have calculated needing 5 wraps per size at an average wrap cost of £7.50 each. Generally 3 sizes of wrap are needed during a baby’s nappy life.  This is based on our most popular wraps.

We do sell wraps cheaper than £7.50 a wrap and some wraps only need two sizes so this would reduce the overall cost.
