Are washables bulky - will I need to buy bigger size clothing for my baby?Depending on the type of nappy you buy, you may sometimes need to go up a size in clothes when your baby is young but this will even out by about 6 months.

Will they leak?Because you don’t want to be worrying about whether or not your nappy is leaking, all nappies sold by Boo Coo are selected because they provide leak proof confidence. Any nappy, washable or disposable will leak sometimes, but the fit of a washable is fantastic and leaks usually only happen if the nappy has not been put on properly, the size is wrong or the nappy has been left on past it’s natural absorbency time.

Can I use them at night?Absolutely. A washable can be used all night with no leaks. From experience the best nappies to use at night are either a white/unbleached Totsbots or a Sandys. A booster pad may be needed as well.

Will there be wetness next to my baby’s skin – will this cause nappy rash? Most babies sometimes get nappy rash. Recent research carried out at Bristol University concluded that nappy rash was due to other factors rather than whether a washable or disposable was used. Factors such as not changing the nappy often enough, the level of acidity in the soiling due to teething or the type of food eaten.
Logically washable nappies should help prevent nappy rash. They are more breathable than disposables, keep the bottom cooler and have no perfumes or chemicals in them that could irritate the skin.

There is alot of advertising around keeping your baby dry. Some washable nappies have in built stay dry liners that wick moisture into the core of the nappy. With other washables using a fleece liner helps keep wetness away from your baby’s skin. There will always be a bit of wetness as washables don’t contain the chemical gels found within disposables that draw water into the core of the nappy. A bit of wetness will not bother your baby and can also aid earlier potty training.

I don’t have a tumbler dryer. Which nappy is best for me?You need a nappy which air drys reasonably quickly and stays soft without the softening effect of a tumble dryer. One part nappies dry quickest and stay soft however you dry them. Similarly the Motherease birth to potty nappy has an inbuilt stay dry liner which keeps the inside of the nappy soft. See product detail for the drying time of other nappies.

What about environmentally friendly disposables? There are various disposables on the market that are branded environmentally friendly. Any disposable uses up precious landfill space but choosing a more biodegradable disposable will help. Boo coo sells Tushies which are 99% biodegradable and the only disposables on the market free from gels and plastics. By comparison Nature Child nappies are 70% biodegradable, Moltex are 50-60% and main brand disposables are 40-50%. All these nappies contain chemical gels and differing levels of bleaches, dyes and plastics.
